MY REVIEW: I am a latecomer to the Flavia de Luce series. I read the first book around...two years ago, I believe. The series has been out for quite some time now. With the ninth book, it is coming to an end. I'm sorry to see it go, but I think it's just as well. I could tell the author was running out of ideas of what to do with the series. Some of the previous books wandered in plot a lot. The same happened with this book. But we do ultimately get a good conclusion for Flavia and everyone else in her life. For the record, I wouldn't be opposed to a series about adult Flavia de Luce. Just saying.
It's always a bit bittersweet when a series comes to an end. On one hand...you get to know the characters are going to be okay in the end. On the other hand: no more books. Flavia, I'm going to miss you and your delight in stumbling upon dead bodies.

Book Review: The Stone Sky

MY REVIEW: If you are into sci-fi/fantasy at all, chances are you already know what this one is about, so I'll spare you going into that. If you've made it to book 3, chances are you already know if you're going to read this or not. So I probably don't need to convince you to read this.
Broken Earth is one of those very different trilogies. It's dystopian...but it's also a very character based SFF book. It's Jemisin, so it's beautifully written. There are so many great lines in this that are relevant. The ending is very powerful and give all sorts of feelings.
This is not a typical dystopian series. It's not action based. It's mostly character focused and it's a SFF book you have to pay attention too or you will miss important details. There's a good chance it won't be everyone's cup of tea. But it is mine and I have loved every minute of this trilogy. Once again, I'm reminded that I need to go back and read through Jemisin's other stuff.

MY REVIEW: As you all know, I'm a big Victoria Schwab fan. Or V. E. Schwab as she's known in the adult fiction section. This trilogy has been a fun ride from beginning to end.
I will say my one issue with this is...it kind of ended predictably. There wasn't really much in here that I wasn't expecting to happen. There were one or two surprises, dealing with side characters that I didn't expect. I also am really pleased with how the author handled the Kell/Lila romance at the end. It was a very realistic ending for their characters. No forced happy ending marriage plus babies.
But even though it was kind of a predictable ending, it was still a satisfying ending. I'm very pleased with it. It looks like we might be getting a new trilogy set in this world (no release date yet though, so will probably be awhile) and I have to say...I'm for it. She also has a few more books in YA coming so it looks like we'll be getting lots of Schwab in our future and that makes me very happy.

Book Review: The End of Oz

MY REVIEW: This series...I don't know what to think about this series anymore. It's been such an up and down sort of series, that was honestly...mostly down. I probably should have quit awhile ago, but damn it, I love this messed up version of Oz.
So, here I am. Reading a finale that was...just okay. Like honestly, the rest of the series was. I wasn't expecting much from the ending, but I was hoping for at least a little more then (SPOILER): after defeat, Amy goes back to Kansas and married her guy. (Edit: Don't know what happened with that sentence there. Fixed it) Like, really?
So yeah. A ho hum ending to an overall average series that I probably should have quit before now. I am such a sucker for awesome fantasy worlds.

Book Review: Take the Key and Lock Her Up

MY REVIEW: Embassy Row has definitely been a wild ride of a series. This last book, was no exception. If you're familiar with Ally Carter's books, you probably already know what to expect from this series. It has lots of action, some romance, teenagers getting shit done, and some surprise twists.
I will say, I kind of with the Embassy Row series was a bit longer. I sort of felt like this one wanted to be four books instead of three. I felt like there were two books in this last one that had to get squished together because that was all the contract was for or something. As result the plot goes like it's one of those hundred meter dash races at the Olympics. I was getting whiplash from all the plot developments.
Ultimately, this did end in a satisfying way that mostly made sense. I just wish we'd maybe have had some more time to process things. All in all though, this was a successful trilogy. I don't love it as much as Gallagher Girls. but it is on par with Heist Society quality wise. In other words: it's adventurous fun as I've come to expect from Carter.

MY REVIEW: Oh Fifth Wave trilogy, you started out so well. I really liked the first book. It wasn't mind-blowing but it was one of the few alien invasion stories out there that I actually found plausible. Then...like sadly most trilogies...the second book happened. Too many multiple PoVs got introduced, the world-building turned into a giant mess and basically it felt as if someone completely different had written the second book.
I honestly was so disappointed with the second book, I almost didn't really bother with this third one. But I saw it at the library and figured I might as well just get the trilogy done. Unfortunately...I don't think this trilogy quite recovered from the mess of the second book. I found I didn't particularly care about any of the characters anymore. The ending didn't have quite the impact I think the author was going for as a result. It was a realistic ending, I'll give the author that. But...ultimately...I just didn't care anymore so I basically yawned my way through it.
This is one of those books that I suspect maybe should have been just a standalone. Because if I had just stuck to the first, I probably would have been happy with it. But, we got two more books and those two books kind of turned everything into a mess. So...I can't really give this any better then an average rating.

Book Review: Bad Blood

MY REVIEW: It's always a little bittersweet when a favorite series ends. I have enjoyed every installment of this series since it first started and am very sad to see it go. For those that don't know what it is: basically it's a YA Criminal Minds if they had powers instead of tech and if there were more on-going plots instead of just one-shot mysteries where there is no character development. I might have issues with Criminal Minds ;shrugs;
Personally I loved the ending. We got answers to the main mystery. We have a general idea of where the gang ended up. I was satisfied. I want more, because I adore these characters so much. But I am overall happy with where we ended up. I am sorry to see this series end but can't wait to see what new ideas Barnes has in store for us next.
WHO SHOULD READ: Fans of the first three books, Criminal Minds fans, CSI fans

Book Review: Wayfarer

PREMISE: Etta and Nicholas are now separated and struggling to get back to each other as they try and find a way to protect time from the two groups that would do it harm.
MY REVIEW: An unforseen issue that can pop up when you read as much as I do is you sometimes struggle to remember plots and have to make sure you're not mixing up the plot of this series with the plot of another series. Now, I might not have remembered everyone's name from this series (I'm bad with names, that's not a reflection on Bracken at all), but I am surprised at how much I actually did remember the plot of this. Especially as I read it fairly early last year.
To me, that says Bracken wrote a memorable book. I don't love this as much as I do with Darkest Minds, but it is a very interesting series. It's also very very very fast paced. It's long (over five hundred pages) but those five hundred pages go by fast.
The ending is pretty satisfying, it answers questions left over from the first book. Sophia is a treasure, I want an entire book about her. All in all, this was a good and satisfying ending. Bracken has a new series possibly starting in September (MG from the looks of it) and I have to say, it looks pretty awesome.
WHO SHOULD READ: fans of Passengers, time travel fans, Firebird Trilogy fans

Book Review: The Midnight Star

MY REVIEW: This trilogy has been...interesting to say the least. When it first started, I liked it well enough but also found it pretty average. Then...I read the second book and Lu took the trilogy in a direction I actually wasn't at all expecting. That doesn't happen much in YA nowadays. I still tip my hat to her for that.
This last book continued to surprise. Once again, there was an ending I didn't expect. The author did not take easy routes with things. Storylines were tied up nicely (and in some cases tragically).
This is one of the few trilogies that has managed to get better with each installment. I am very pleased with how it went and I am extremely excited for Warcross. I think Marie Lu has basically made it onto my auto-buy list.

MY REVIEW: Short story add ons to series seems to have become a thing in YA. When it comes to a series like Lunar Chronicles, I don't particularly mind it. Especially if it's a wide variety of stories such as this collection.
Some of these I have read before as they were released with previous Lunar books. But some were new. Most, didn't really add anything revealing, except for maybe the one with Scarlet's grandmother. We learn about her grandfather's identity and some more about what Scarlet's childhood was like. Others were just nice supplied info.
If you are a die-hard Lunar Chronicles fan who is going through withdrawal from the series, this is a nice way to live in the world a bit longer. It's also a nice holdover for if you're waiting for Meyer's next series which apparently is dealing with superheros. To which I say, hell yes.

MY REVIEW: I'll be honest, I was a little surprised when I heard there was going to be a third book in this series. I was under the impression the story was done and was happy with the way things ended. But...I'm a completionist, so I read this anyway.
As I suspected...it was pretty much unnecessary. Then there's something that happens in the end that cheapens a big thing from book 2 so much that I kind of wish this book hadn't happened. But it did. So here we are.
I'm torn on this one because I personally didn't like it very much and just wondered why it was needed. But I also realize that some people like really happy endings and wanted more from the series. So if that is you, go ahead and read this. If you're like me and was satisfied with the ending from book 2...I'd stick with that ending.

Book Review: The Crimson Skew

MY REVIEW: I will always have mixed feelings when it comes to this trilogy I think and this book is no exception. As with the first two, the world-building is fantastic. I adore S.E. Grove's imagination and the ways she plays with history. I even enjoy things like lack of forced love interests and whatnot.
Unfortunately...the characters are kind of stock characters and the story mostly just adventure so I don't really feel any huge connection to them. I like what I read when I read it, but it's not like say, my love for the Harry Potter or Raven Boys characters.
If you loved the first two books, you'll probably love this one. It ties everything together very nicely and is more of the same. Overall this is a satisfying trilogy. It's just not what I would call a must-read series unless you're a serious world-building nerd like I am.

Book Review: Winter

PREMISE: Cinder and her friends get a rebellion going against the evil Queen of Lunar.
MY REVIEW: I meant to get to this a lot sooner then I actually did. But real life happened. Then there's the fact that this book was long. It looks the same size as the others, but is in fact about three hundred pages or so more then the other books. For good reason. There's a lot going on in this book.
The way it goes about bringing down the queen is actually quite unexpected. I love how the author did it. It was hard, the characters had to work for it, but they got their happy ending of sorts. All the story lines are tied up in a satisfactory way. There's some hints of more that I suspect will be tied up in the short story collection, which I grabbed last week. I'm hopefully going to get to that one next month.
This does everything an ending to a series should. I was very satisfied with it. I can't wait to get my hands on Heartless, whenever that happens.

Book Review: Witch's Pyre

MY REVIEW: Sigh. I'm always torn when it comes to Angelini's books. On one hand: they're damn entertaining reads and that's clearly all they're really meant to be. So I can't deny they do their purpose. On the other hand...they're predictable and have many problematic elements going on in them, like tokenization.
Angelini does have diversity in her books. But...it's only ever in the side characters and those side characters are rarely fleshed out and tend to be stereotyped, or worse made out to be exotic. Then there's the weird handling of LGBT characters in this, or should I say character, because there was only one. Yes, we have Caleb. But...he's never shown to have his own romance or character arc at like all, and when then when a female gets too close to Lily at one point, someone actually says it's creepy. It kind of reeks of gay men being okay but lesbians, not so much. So much nope there.
The author did wrap up story lines in a satisfactory way. It was just all in a predictable sort of way. Even the promising turn around thing with Rowan quickly goes back to business as usual. This is readable. But...it just has issues that bug me, which was a thing I had with her last trilogy as well. That on top of predictability...made this kind of a boring read, despite all the things going on in it.

Book Review: Bright Blaze of Magic

MY REVIEW: And so another trilogy comes to a close. I'll always have slightly mixed feelings about this one. It's fun, no doubt. It's got Estep's voice written all over it. It's just...a tad predictable. It's not what I'd call must read reading. It's more: if you like urban fantasy a lot sort of reading and are looking to tide yourself over until your next favorite book comes out.
It's got all the standards there, about the only thing that sets this one apart from other urban fantasy series is that there's no love triangle. Yes my friends, you can write a YA series without one! There's still romance and it's all very cute. At least this love interest doesn't make me want to pull the heroine aside and say "girl, he's a sexist douche, run away" like some of these YA male leads can nowadays.
If you've enjoyed the characters and the plot in this series, it's perfectly well worth a read to see it through till the end. Estep brings everything to a satisfying conclusion...it's just a rather predictable conclusion. But I'll take predictable over confusing/makes no sense endings any day of the week, so I say it's a perfectly decent last book.

MY REVIEW: This series sneaks up on you. At least it did with me. I liked the first book perfectly fine but didn't go gaga over it like everyone else seemed too. But then came the second book and before I knew it I was eagerly anticipating every release. Also might have been mildly stalking Steifvater's blog/tumblr a bit in the hopes for some news about it...
I meant to get to this a whole lot sooner but that's when my father's health starting declining and so...it got pushed aside. But I finally picked it back up this month and as I suspected, it was a wonderfully satisfying conclusion.
Also, I just heard that Stiefvater is possibly doing a trilogy centered around Ronan. It will probably be forever and a day until we get it, but I am all for it if it happens. Along with anything else Stiefvater has planned. She's basically a auto-read now for me.

Book Review: Their Fractured Light

MY REVIEW: I meant to read this a long time ago. It's just that so many books have come out since then, it's hard to keep up on the releases. The Starbound trilogy has been a favorite of mine and I think this was a nice satisfying end to it.
I will say, the romance this time...not as great as the others. But I think that's because they only got to star in half a book while the other couples got a whole book. Half of this book is dedicated to telling their story and the other half to bringing about the conclusion. I think it would have been a better idea to have four books. One for each couple and then the conclusion where they all interact. Because the consequence was I cared very little for these two as I was more worried about the other characters.
Other then that issue, this was a well done ending. Everything is tied up nicely and in a plausible way. This trilogy was a fun ride from beginning to end. Definitely recommend it for those looking for some light sci-fi.

MY REVIEW: I have racked my brain trying to figure out why it is that I'm just not as enamored with this series as everyone else seems to be. It wasn't the writing. I actually quite like Riggs' writing style. I love the concept. It's not a terribly original concept (it's basically a redux of the X-Men) but it's still well done. The photographs are great, so why is it that I just can't get into this?
It finally hit me about halfway through: I care about none of these characters. Mostly because they're just all so bland. They are stereotypical characters who never veer out of the strict box they're put in. About the only character I semi care about is Miss Peregrine because she's the most entertaining. But she was barely in this book, which made getting through this book somewhat of a chore. Don't get me started on how few female characters there are here and how poorly developed they are.
Plot wise it's also a bit average and lack luster. Nothing happened here that shocked me. No side character even died! It was honestly a ho hum end to a average at best trilogy. I honestly just don't get the hype surrounding this one, sorry. Should make for a pretty movie though. I might see it because Eva Green as Miss Peregrine will be perfect.

Book Review: Lady Renegades

MY REVIEW: Once again, it looks like I'm the only one that actually enjoyed the ending of a trilogy/series. This seems to be happening a lot lately. Oh well.
So I liked the way this one ended. It wasn't typical of most YA trilogies (which I'm guessing is why it's not a super popular ending), it was a bit more bittersweet then most. I do think the middle part of it dragged a lot. For most of it, David and Harper are separated so I did miss the snark there. But we still have Harper kicking butt and her awesome friends and at the end of the day, that was my major draw to this series. So I was happy.
It did everything and ending trilogy should do and tied up some loose ends. I'm personally sad to see this one go. But it looks like Hawkins has a middle-gradish book coming out and apparently a new series in the works so I won't be sad for long.

Book Review: Remembrance

GENRE: Urban Fantasy, Ghosts
PREMISE: Susannah and Jesse are now grown up and engaged. Of course, Paul Slater would choose now to come back into Susannah's life.
MY REVIEW: Once upon a time back in high school, I fell in love with the Mediator series. This was the late nineties or so. I had just discovered Princess Diaries and then discovered that Cabot had a whole slew of books out there and from then on, I've been a Cabot fangirl for life. Needless to say, when I heard this was coming out, there were lots of fangirl squees.
As with Royal Wedding, this was a bit predictable, but it was still damn enjoyable as always with Cabot. We got to see what happened to all our favorite characters. This book also came at a good time as I've been dealing with family issues. Cabot's books always put me in a good mood, and this one was no exception.
Seems as though Cabot is continuing this revisit to nostalgia because apparently there's also another book in her Boy series, which is an adult romance series that tells the story via emails, journals, and any sort of paper thing you can think of. I for one, welcome it and am holding out hope for an American Girl sequel. Also, I wouldn't be opposed to a spin-off series about the triplets who were introduced in this book.
