Book Review: Vivian Apple at the End of the World

TITLE: Vivian Apple at the End of the World
Book 1 in the Vivian Apple series
AUTHOR: Katie Coyle
PUBLISHED: January 6th, 2015
CATEGORY: YA
GENRE: Dystopian
PREMISE: Vivian wakes up in a world where the rapture may or may not have happened. She embarks on a road trip to find out what really happened.
MY REVIEW: If anyone ever tries to tell you that the dystopian genre is dead, please do me a favor and laugh at them. Hard. While I understand why some people may think so, evidence has proven otherwise. Every time I think this genre is on its last leg, I read one that proves, nope, this genre still has much to offer.
This book is a perfect example of that. Now, the aftermath of the rapture is something that has been done before (see the awful and preachy Left Behind series). But this takes it in a pretty brilliant new direction. I love the world building in it. The characters are all interesting and it is written wonderfully. Also, yay for all the diversity.
I don't want to get into too many details in this one, because honestly most of the brilliant stuff takes place at the end and I don't want to spoil it. But just know, I loved the hell out of this book. It reminded me why I liked dystopians in the first place. I can't wait for the next one.
WHO SHOULD READ: Dystopian fans, Left Behind fans, those who like books not afraid to look at things like faith.
MY RATING: Four and a half out of Five road trips at the end of the world

  1. I think this genre has grown and we're now seeing more thoughtful examinations of post-apocalyptic scenarios. I thought this book was very good!

  2. Well...I'd argue that there were thoughtful dystopians beforehand. It's just that there were so many dystopians being published that the thoughtful ones got overlooked. I mean for a while there at least two dystopians per week were being published in that period after Hunger Games ended and the movies started and Divergent started to reign supreme. Everyone wanted that sweet dystopian money and as a result the YA section quickly became over-saturated with them. So I do get why people became burnt out on them quickly. I started to get sick of them and I love dystopians.
Now it's finally slowed down (John Green look alikes have become the it thing from what I can see) so the really good dystopians are finally able to get a chance to shine.
